The Braille system, devised in 1821 by Frenchman Louis Braille, is a method that is widely used by blind people to read and write. Each braille character or cell is made up of six dot positions, arranged in a rectangle containing two columns of three dots each. Although it is possible to transcribe braille by simply substituting the equivalent Braille character for its printed equivalent, such a character-by-character transcription (known as Grade 1 Braille) is primarily used as an introduction to Braille. Braille characters are much larger than their printed equivalents and to reduce space and increase reading speed, virtually all braille items are transcribed in what is known as Grade 2 Braille, which uses a system of contractions to reduce space and speed the process of reading. As with most human linguistic activities, Grade 2 Braille embodies a complex system of customs, styles, and practices. Our Braille is produced in easy to handle A4 size that is embossed on both sides to reduce the bulk of each document that we transcribe. This format has proved to be more user-friendly for reading by visually impaired people, easier for storage and fits standard envelopes for easier posting fitting through most letterboxes. We can produce Braille in other formats and in a variety of paper grades.
We are working with COTIS (Confederation of Transcribed Information Services) and UKAPB (United Kingdom Associates of Braille Producers) to create the first set of industry guidelines on both the quality and style of Braille production. We can produce materials in both grade 1 and 2 Braille according to the request of the Customer. The documents that we produce can be bound and presented in a variety of ways according to the wishes of the Client. We are used to working with our Clients to find presentation solutions that best meet with company and brand standards. We can also transcribe Braille into a variety of languages and offer Braille verification services to a number of large Pharmaceutical companies in addition to providing their Patient Information Leaflets (PIL's.) We are one of the few transcription companies that employ a dedicated Braille verifying team. Our Braillist ensure that the layout, page order, and written text can be checked at all times as part of our quality assurance. Our Braille verification services provides additional assurance to our Clients that their customers are receiving the very highest standard in terms of product and service. In addition VST can transcribe documents into The Moon System of Embossed Reading (commonly known as the Moon writing, Moon alphabet, Moon type or Moon code). Moon was developed by Dr. William Moon and published in 1845. It is a writing system that uses embossed symbols mostly derived from the Roman alphabet (but simplified). Rather than the dots of Braille, Moon Writing is made up of raised curves, angles, and lines. Moon transcription is available on all documents and is produced in A4.
